The role
As General Counsel at Summize you will be a trusted advisor to the executive team and Board, owning the company’s legal strategy, but uniquely involved with our customers, prospect discussions and product roadmap.
This is a very unique GC role for a very hands-on, pragmatic and commercial individual that feels they would thrive with a more varied role being involved in commercial and product discussions in addition to the traditional legal work.
You may currently be an Associate General Counsel, VP Legal or Legal Director with deep exposure to high-growth technology businesses. We value high potential, sound judgment, and leadership capability over prior GC tenure.
We are looking for a lawyer with a strong personal reputation for quality, integrity, and sound judgment, who is respected by peers and stakeholders, but whose profile complements rather than overshadows the company’s leadership and mission.
Key responsibilities:
Strategic & Advisory
- Act as principal legal advisor to the CEO, executive team, and Board.
- Support corporate strategy, fundraising, and long-term planning with clear, commercial legal advice.
- Help shape and enhance company culture by balancing risk management with speed, innovation, and growth.
Commercial & Product Legal
- Own and evolve customer, partner, and supplier contracts, including enterprise SaaS agreements.
- Advise product and engineering teams on issues such as data protection, security, IP, AI, and platform risk.
- Support the commercial functions with discussions around how the Summize product can assist the same persona in other companies.
- Contribute to product roadmap decisions and be involved in product testing throughout the development lifecycle.
- Work closely with marketing on establishing a Summize customer community and be involved in thought leadership activities around the application of CLM to the GC / in-house legal role.
Corporate & Governance
- Manage corporate governance, Board and committee matters, and investor relations from a legal perspective.
- Lead legal aspects of equity financing, secondary transactions, and future M&A activity.
- Oversee, in partnership with finance, equity plans, and shareholder communications.
Regulatory, Risk & Compliance
- Design and implement a proportionate compliance framework appropriate for Summize.
- Oversee privacy and data protection strategy (e.g. GDPR and international equivalents).
- Identify, assess, and manage legal and regulatory risk across jurisdictions as the business scales.
Employment & Internal Matters
- Advise on complex employment law matters and policies development
- Support international expansion, including employment models and local legal requirements.
- Manage disputes, investigations, and sensitive internal issues with discretion and sound judgment.
Legal Function Development
- Establish the in-house legal function, including deciding what to handle internally vs. via external counsel.
- Manage one existing Legal Counsel in the team.
- Manage external partnerships with law firms efficiently and cost-effectively.
What we’re looking for:
- Senior in-house legal experience (e.g., Senior Legal Counsel, Lead Counsel, VP Legal, Associate General Counsel) at a high-growth SaaS or B2B technology company.
- Demonstrated experience operating as the most senior in-house lawyer, or de facto legal lead, even if not previously titled “General Counsel”
- Hands-on ownership of commercial SaaS contracting, including:
- MSAs, SaaS subscriptions, DPAs, SLAs, and enterprise customer negotiations
- Direct involvement in venture financings and corporate governance, including:
- Supporting fundraising activities
- Board materials, resolutions, and investor communications
- Equity plans etc. (with outside counsel support)
- Practical experience advising on data privacy, security, and product-related legal issues, including:
- GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and customer security requirements
- Product launches and feature reviews
- Experience partnering closely with Sales, Product, Finance, and People teams in a fast-scaling environment
- Experience in international business with entities in multiple global locations
