What is Legal Disruptors?

Legal Disruptors is our way of breaking the mold and the outdated stereotype of what the in-house legal role looks like.

Legal professionals have long been known as the business bottleneck, the cost center, the blockers, but we know this is an archaic perception. Legal disruption is about challenging outdated stereotypes and demonstrating that in-house legal professionals play a vital role in their company’s broader strategy, adding real value and driving revenue when given the platform to do so.

“The same mistake I’ve seen over and over again is that the business brings in legal too late.”
Carly Duvall Le Riche, General Counsel at Cariloop.

Our Legal Disruptors report, interviews, webinars, and survey aim to inspire in-house lawyers to show and prove their true value. Through our activities, you’ll gain tips and insights from Summize’s legal experts and your legal peers who are redefining the in-house legal role as a revenue driver, business enabler, and collaborative partner.

The start of our Legal Disruption

At the start of 2025, we published our initial Legal Disruptors report, based on the survey results from over 250 in-house legal professionals about their challenges, the evolution of the legal role, and emerging opportunities.

We provided a commentary of the results, advice on how to combat the challenges, and insights from industry leaders and coveted publications such as Bloomberg Law, CMS Law, and Artificial Lawyer to inspire legal teams.

Welcoming our Legal Disruptors

Since the release of our report, we wanted to go one step further and to discuss these challenges and opportunities with legal professionals who we believe are true legal disruptors.

Our Legal Disruptors are from a range of legal professionals, all with in-house legal experience, and from a diverse range of backgrounds, industries and cultures.

“You can still be your authentic self and be very effective. You don’t have to change your DNA, but small changes make a huge difference.”
Sheila Murphy, Founder of Focus Forward Consulting.

But they all have one thing in common – they’ve disrupted the outdated legal stereotypes and they’ve elevated the legal role.

We interviewed these disruptors to find out how, with the aim to guide and inspire legal professionals who also want to elevate their role and be part of their business’ wider strategic conversation. We asked our disruptors about their journeys, the challenges they faced, how they combated the challenges and the lessons that have proved successful for them to get ahead.

Common talking points and guidance

Four common themes emerged when interviewing all of the disruptors – four principles all legal teams can use to help elevate their role:

  1. Strengthen your business acumen
  2. Build cross-department relationships
  3. Create a strong in-house brand
  4. Use tech and AI as your trusted partner

Each disruptor discussed these themes in detail, all offering sound advice on how to apply each theme within your day-to-day legal role.

“When starting to adopt and use technology, it needs to start with, what are we trying to do?”
Tom Fleuriot, Founder of Flocsam.

Our disruptors’ advice is invaluable. It’s real-world, proven experience that these legal professionals have used within their in-house careers to become valued and impactful within their businesses.
