How it all started
It all started in 2018 when our Founder and CEO Tom Dunlop had his “aha” moment.
As a General Counsel at the time, Tom was used to reviewing and managing endless contracts. As someone who is used to always thinking outside the box and striving for greatness, Tom knew there must be a better way of working, a better way to summarize contracts and extract the key information the business needed.
He teamed up with experienced software developer David Smith, and together they embarked on a journey to improve the contract process for in-house lawyers.
Initially starting out as a contract summary solution, Summize’s capabilities soon expanded to span the end-to-end contract lifecycle. The solution received rave reviews from clients due to the intuitive user experience and expert approach to implementation and onboarding.
And that was just the start for Summize…
The history of Summize

The idea of Summize
General Counsel Tom Dunlop and Developer David Smith joined forces to create technology that could easily extract and summarize key contract information. This was just the beginning of their idea and vision for the future.

Product launch
Created Summize, initially as a contract summarization tool, and started to gain our first customers.

Richard Somerfield joined
We expanded our Senior Leadership Team with Chief Technology Officer Richard Somerfield.

Received a £500,000 investment from Maven Equity Finance
£500,000 investment to grow the Summize offering and solution from Maven Equity Finance.

Incorporated in Manchester
Incorporated the business in Manchester, our first office and home, and began to scale the business across the UK and EMEA markets.

First to market with AI reviews
Summize became the first solution to market with AI reviews, directly embedded within Microsoft Word.

Legal tech breakthrough awards 2020
Awarded trhe legal tech breakthrough awards 2020, as the Team Collaboration Platform of the year.

250% revenue increase each quarter
In our early stages, we reported a 250% revenue increase each quarter for our financial yearm as a result of a growing demand for our time-saving technology.

Northern Star Award
Awarded the Northern Star award at the GP. Bullhound Northern Tech Awards 2021.

Transitioned from a contract summarization tool, to an end-to-end contract lifecycle management solution, with a focus on mid-market corporates.

For the fourth consecutive year, we reported more than 100% growth in net Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) and doubled our customer base worldwide.

Opening of our San Diego office

Ended the year with 15 awards across legal technology and contract innovation awards in both the US and EMEA.

Raised $50 million investment
Raised a $50 million investment to accelerate our next phase of growth, from existing investors - Maven Capital Partners and YFM Equity Partners - and new investors Kennet Partners and Federated Hermes Private Equity.
